Filed under: Motorsports , Europe , Infiniti , Mercedes-Benz , Ferrari , Racing , McLaren The 2014 German Formula 1 Grand Prix is the hump-day race in the season and the penultimate chance for drivers and teams to rack up points before the summer break. Trying to stay on top after his first DNF of the year at the British Grand Prix , Mercedes AMG Petronas driver Nico Rosberg didn’t have to wait until the race for misfortune to find Lewis Hamilton ; his British teammate crashed out of the Q2 qualifying session due to a brake failure, then had to change his gearbox due of the crash, a calamity that left him starting 20th on the grid. Rosberg took pole ahead of the Williams duo of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa , with Kevin Magnussen surprising everyone with a fourth place in his McLaren .

Raikkonen likely to retire from F1 after 2015 [w/poll]

Filed under: Motorsports , Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , Ferrari Though his irreverent demeanor party-goer image might suggest otherwise, make no mistake about it: at 34 years old (and with 37-year-old Mark Webber out of the race), Kimi Raikkonen is the oldest driver in Formula One . He’s three months older than Jenson Button , a good year older than his former wingman Felipe Massa , three years ahead of Adrian Sutil and a good decade beyond the latest crop of up-and-comers on the grid.

Race Recap: 2014 British F1 Grand Prix readjusts the balance of power

Filed under: Motorsports , Infiniti , Mercedes-Benz , Ferrari , UK , Racing , McLaren Qualifying for the British Formula One Grand Prix was just as much a surprise for fans as it was for teams. Certain team weather radar displays didn’t accurately pinpoint storm systems over the track, and in the case of at least two teams, the lack of data was compounded by poor decision making. That’s how both Ferraris and both Williams got kicked out of qualifying in Q3 – the drivers already on track took advantage of a dry spell between rains, but Ferrari and Williams waited too long to get back out, and by the time they did it had started raining again.

Ferrari considering return to Le Mans racing in 2015

Filed under: Motorsports , Ferrari Rumors are swirling that Ferrari may be contemplating a return to Le Mans racing as soon as 2015. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports the Italian automaker may apply the development of a new 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine for Formula One to an LMP1 car for Le Mans , and have it ready for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in two years. This follows hints made by Scuderia Ferrari CEO Stefano Domenicali last month that the newly developed F1 engine could be used for ” some interesting projects .” Ferrari has a history of success in Le Mans racing, though it hasn’t won the big endurance outright since 1965.

Ferrari chairman ticked off by Alonso

Filed under: Motorsports , Ferrari , Racing Luca Cordero di Montezemolo does not strike us as the kind of person we’d want to cross. We imagine the Chairman of Ferrari as sort of like an automotive Don Corleone, a thought that is further confirmed when we hear about the aftermath of last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso made some unsubstantiated remarks that have angered his team, with The Daily Mail reporting that when asked after the race what he wanted for his birthday, the Spaniard responded “Someone else’s car.” And while no one seems to know exactly what was said, it was enough to prompt a personal phone call from the boss of Ferrari on Alonso’s birthday for a dressing down

The pre-race and first in-race report from Le Mans

We’re at the track now as a guest of Audi and plan to stay through the evening, and even we haven’t been able to find out what caused the accident – the only video is from just after the incident, and beyond the statement from ACO there’s been no more news. The Aston Martin in the LM GTE Am class and its all-Danish drivers had taken pole in its class and was one of the favorites to win

Recap: 2013 Spanish Grand Prix is Catalan for ‘Lottery’ and ‘More pit stops’

Filed under: Motorsports , Europe , Infiniti , Lotus , Mercedes-Benz , Ferrari , McLaren This year’s Formula One season might qualify as being just as crazy as last year’s, only it’s a different kind of crazy. Instead of a new winner every Sunday, how the winner actually manages to take the victory is the mystery, and just when we thought the season might have settled into a groove regarding team performance, here comes the Spanish Grand Prix to remind us that we don’t know anything until the race has been run. There were many similarities to past weekends to being this one: Mercedes -AMG Petronas showed awesome one-lap pace, Fernando Alonso did well enough in qualifying to get fifth on the grid but talked up the race pace of the Ferrari , Kimi R

Race Recap: 2013 Chinese Grand Prix a test of tires, carnage and a fight for second [spoilers]

Filed under: Motorsports , China , Infiniti , Lotus , Ferrari , Renault , Racing , McLaren Formula One fans and commentators have spent the three weeks since the Malaysian Grand Prix discussing two things more than any other: that pass, and tires. Sebastian Vettel spent days giving his tongue an Olympic workout on the verbal gymnastics parallel bars before finally admitting he passed his Infiniti Red Bull teammate Mark Webber on purpose partly for reasons of payback, partly out of a desire to win – he doesn’t apologize for it and he would do it again. Then came those Pirellis – every single driver and team representative interview touches on how important it is to understand the tires and manage their degradation
