Fiat gives outgoing Ferrari chairman $35M severance package

Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , Earnings/Financials , Ferrari , Fiat Luca di Montezemolo may not have wanted to leave Ferrari this way, but don’t feel too bad for the departing chairman, because he’ll be hitting the ground with a golden parachute so big that he’ll never have to work again. According to the latest reports, Fiat will pay Montezemolo 26.95 million euros (nearly $35 million) in severance pay. A little more than half of that will be paid in a lump sum of 13.71 million euros ($17.7M, equivalent to five times his annual salary) on January 31, 2015, with the rest to be paid within the next 20 years

Filed under: Motorsports , Europe , Infiniti , Mercedes-Benz , Ferrari , Racing , McLaren In the two weeks it’s taken Formula One to move from Belgium to Italy, fleet-footed rumor has outrun the driver transfer market – Fernando Alonso can’t issue enough denials of a departure from Ferrari , McLaren isn’t sure what it wants to do with its drivers, Lotus has found out why it stinks this year and that the problem can’t be fixed this year, and Nico Rosberg is said to have donated a team-ordered six-figure fine to charity to atone for his Belgian waffling. Oh, and Lewis Hamilton regained his pole-grabbing form. That’s how the Mercedes AMG Petronas man found himself at the head of the grid for the Italian Grand Prix, ahead of his teammate Rosberg by a quarter of a second.

Ferrari 458 Speciale already sold out for first year

Filed under: Car Buying , Coupe , Performance , Ferrari , Luxury Ferrari tends to sell its models out extremely quickly – its wait lists are the stuff of legend. That’s especially true when the cars in question are of the fastest or most exclusive variety. If new reports are to be believed, Maranello has already sold the entire 499-unit production run of its new LaFerrari hypercar, and now Australia’s Motoring is claiming that Ferrari has also filled its order book for the entire first year’s production run of its new 458 Speciale .

2014 Ferrari FF

Filed under: Performance , Hatchback , Ferrari , Luxury , Quick Spins Ferrari announced a panoramic roof option for its all-wheel drive FF at the 2012 Paris Motor Show , promising the new full-length glass panel would offer its well-heeled clientele “a genuine open-air driving feeling, while providing thermal and acoustic insulation.” That statement was intriguing, as my experience with glass roofs usually ends abruptly after I close the opaque shade – as a Southern Californian, I always find tinted glass panels too hot during the day and too cold at night. While the FF I reviewed in August was fitted with a solid aluminum roof, I was fortunate to catch up with a brand-new silver Ferrari FF (it only had about 160 miles on the odometer) with the optional panoramic roof (a $17,666 upgrade) at the Formula One race at Circuit of the Americas just last month. It was my lucky day, as I was about to spend about six hours with the four-place Italian, blissfully enjoying it during the warm day until long after the sun had set on the Texas horizon

1964 Ferrari 250 LM expected to net $12-15 million at RM’s NY auction

Filed under: Classics , Auctions , Ferrari , Racing If you’re one of the very fortunate souls that has $12 to $15 million burning a very large hole in your pocket, we’ve found the perfect way to liberate yourself from the burden of so much money – buy this Ferrari , which is being put up for auction. It’s a supremely rare Ferrari 250 LM, the 24th member of a 32-car run, that rolled off the assembly line on what we imagine was a brilliant, sunny Italian summer’s day in July of 1964. Officially known as Chassis 6107, this 250 LM is rare because unlike its brothers, it wasn’t originally bought to be a race car

This is what it’s like to drive Magnum PI’s Ferrari 308

Filed under: Classics , Convertible , Coupe , Performance , Videos , Ferrari , Celebrities , Specialty In the pantheon of 80s pop culture, few cars have such provenance as the Ferrari 308 . Sure, vehicular icons like the DeLorean and Pontiac Trans Am (especially in time machine and KITT guise) made us swoon back in the day, but there’s something about the bright red Italian that makes it stand out; perhaps it is the 308’s performance credibility, at least when compared to other memorable cars of its ilk. Our fondness for Magnum PI’s Ferrari 308 is shared by Oscar Verdugo, who’s featured in the video you’ll see below.

Petrolicious gets super Seventies in a Ferrari Dino 208 GT4

Filed under: Classics , Coupe , Performance , Videos , Ferrari , Luxury The Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 was the automaker’s first sports car with a V8 mounted amidships, and that formula quickly became the Italian automaker’s bread and butter. The 308 in the name denotes a 3.0-liter V8, but for the Italian market, where a tax was imposed on cars with engines larger than two liters, Ferrari decided to de-bore the V8 to avoid the tax

Ferrari chairman ticked off by Alonso

Filed under: Motorsports , Ferrari , Racing Luca Cordero di Montezemolo does not strike us as the kind of person we’d want to cross. We imagine the Chairman of Ferrari as sort of like an automotive Don Corleone, a thought that is further confirmed when we hear about the aftermath of last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso made some unsubstantiated remarks that have angered his team, with The Daily Mail reporting that when asked after the race what he wanted for his birthday, the Spaniard responded “Someone else’s car.” And while no one seems to know exactly what was said, it was enough to prompt a personal phone call from the boss of Ferrari on Alonso’s birthday for a dressing down

Fernando Alonso gives German TV interview driving Ferrari F12 at the Nordschleife

Filed under: Motorsports , Coupe , Performance , Europe , Videos , Ferrari , Celebrities , Luxury Fernando Alonso gave a wide-ranging interview to German television station RTL, the Spanish driver and German interviewer conducting the session in Italian, driving a special Italian car on very special German track. Among many answers – from the industriousness of his native Ovideo, Spain to where he relaxes – Alonso gives Ferrari an eight out of ten for the season, admitting they don’t have the fastest car but they have a complete car, and refuses to give himself a number, only saying that he is more complete as well than when he first entered. Beyond the normal-guy persona and wealth of topics, the 10-minute interview is neat for being able to watch Alonso hurl the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta over and around kerbs while he’s answering questions

John Lennon’s first car being sold at auction

Of course, that’s assuming your name also happens to be John Lennon and you’ve just helped record Ticket to Ride with the rest of your Beatles cronies. When news of Lennon getting a driver’s license made the newspapers in England, luxury car makers parked outside his mansion with offerings and this is the one he chose, painted Azzuro Blue with a blue interior.

Ferrari looking to become even more exclusive

Filed under: Coupe , Performance , China , Europe , Plants/Manufacturing , Ferrari , Middle East While most automakers are clawing and scratching for every possible sale, it sounds like Ferrari is content in losing a few potential customers in the name of better exclusivity and higher profits. Autocar reports that Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo recently stated that the Italian automaker hopes to sell fewer than 7,000 units globally in 2013 compared to last year’s tally of 7,318.

Best speculative Ferrari Enzo successor rendering yet

Filed under: Spy Photos , Coupe , Performance , Ferrari , Design/Style While so many supposed Ferrari fanatics are just sitting on their collective hands and waiting for the Italian supercar maker to finally reveal its F150 (or whatever it’ll be called) Enzo follow-up, designer Josiah LaColla has gotten busy with his Wacom tablet and set to work. The results, though quite possibly no closer to the actual F150 as any of the other renderings we’ve seen thus far, are lovely to behold. Well, actually, “lovely” probably isn’t the perfect descriptor – anything less than a little bit brutal wouldn’t be a proper successor to the Enzo, nor would it fit the parameters laid out by the test mules we’ve seen so far
