Ferrari vs. Ferrari: Cut convertibles unloved by collectors?

Filed under: Classics , Auctions , Ferrari The New York Times’ Wheels blog has a really interesting story on a pair of Ferraris that are set to be auctioned off in Monterey during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance . While the two cars are similar on the surface, their differing histories and Ferrari’s attitude towards one of them has led to a sort of experimental auction process. On the one hand, we have one of ten 1967 275 GTB/4 NART Spiders , in the classic Rosso Corsa and appearing at RM Auctions and seen above.

Ferrari considering return to Le Mans racing in 2015

Filed under: Motorsports , Ferrari Rumors are swirling that Ferrari may be contemplating a return to Le Mans racing as soon as 2015. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports the Italian automaker may apply the development of a new 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine for Formula One to an LMP1 car for Le Mans , and have it ready for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in two years. This follows hints made by Scuderia Ferrari CEO Stefano Domenicali last month that the newly developed F1 engine could be used for ” some interesting projects .” Ferrari has a history of success in Le Mans racing, though it hasn’t won the big endurance outright since 1965.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse brings one-make series to the road

Filed under: Motorsports , Coupe , Performance , Ferrari , Racing Lamborghini announced a new Gallardo model today, the all-wheel-drive LP 570-4 Squadra Corse, and it’s almost identical to the LP 570-4 Super Trofeo single-series race car. Its world premiere will be held at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The street-legal Squadra Corse shares key components with the Super Trofeo – both of which are based on the Gallardo Superleggera – including the 570-horsepower V10, carbon fiber rear wing and removable engine hood made in the same material.

Ferrari 458 Scuderia to be unveiled in Frankfurt?

Filed under: Frankfurt Motor Show , Motorsports , Coupe , Performance , Ferrari , Rumormill , Racing We’re heavy on the speculative side with this, but Auto Express is saying that “Rumours of Ferrari 458 Scuderia emerge, with possible debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.” To be clear, that’s the possible debut of a car that is still only a rumor, and we’re not sure it will be called “Scuderia,” either – remember, the track-day 360 was the Challenge Stradale. Admittedly, the rumor of its existence is strong and there is plenty of precedent: Ferrari has introduced some model or variant of its mid-engined V8 sports car at the last three Frankfurt Motor Shows.

Fernando Alonso gives German TV interview driving Ferrari F12 at the Nordschleife

Filed under: Motorsports , Coupe , Performance , Europe , Videos , Ferrari , Celebrities , Luxury Fernando Alonso gave a wide-ranging interview to German television station RTL, the Spanish driver and German interviewer conducting the session in Italian, driving a special Italian car on very special German track. Among many answers – from the industriousness of his native Ovideo, Spain to where he relaxes – Alonso gives Ferrari an eight out of ten for the season, admitting they don’t have the fastest car but they have a complete car, and refuses to give himself a number, only saying that he is more complete as well than when he first entered. Beyond the normal-guy persona and wealth of topics, the 10-minute interview is neat for being able to watch Alonso hurl the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta over and around kerbs while he’s answering questions

Ferrari California replica from Ferris Bueller is so choice

Filed under: Classics , Auctions , Ferrari , TV/Movies We like car auctions well enough, but often the high-end affairs are a bit too much like outdoor museums – very beautiful and very cold, and you’re not allowed to touch anything. A perfect case in point is the upcoming Mecum auction during the 2013 Pebble Beach weekend, which will feature the legendary replica Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder used in none other than Ferris Bueller’s Day Off . Only three were made.

Ferrari looking to become even more exclusive

Filed under: Coupe , Performance , China , Europe , Plants/Manufacturing , Ferrari , Middle East While most automakers are clawing and scratching for every possible sale, it sounds like Ferrari is content in losing a few potential customers in the name of better exclusivity and higher profits. Autocar reports that Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo recently stated that the Italian automaker hopes to sell fewer than 7,000 units globally in 2013 compared to last year’s tally of 7,318.

Why Italians are no longer buying supercars

Filed under: Performance , Europe , Government/Legal , Lamborghini , Maserati , Earnings/Financials , Ferrari , Luxury Italy is the wound that continues to drain blood from the body financial of Italian supercar and sports car makers. The wound was opened by the country’s various financial police who decided to get serious about superyacht-owning and supercar-driving tax cheats a few years ago, by noting their registrations and checking their incomes. When it was found that a rather high percentage of exotic toy owners had claimed a rather low annual income – certain business owners were found to be declaring less income than their employees – the owners began dumping their cars and prospective buyers declined to buy
